London Bridge and Bermondsey Area Information

Historically called the Pool of London, London Bridge as we know it today is an area from beyond Potters Fields Park to just past Tower Bridge.  It is a truly historical district in the heart of London and has many pleasant treats for travellers who find it.  For discerning travellers seeking a place to explore off the beaten track, there are excellent tourist attractions, shops and festivals all in one location.

Shopping

Borough Market, 8 South Street, London SE1 1TL

The Borough Market is one of the most famous farmer's market in the area, if not in London.  Some of the top restaurants in London source their ingredients from here, because the traders are famous for their local and excellent quality products.  The market offers fresh fish, oyster, game, Iberian ham, cheeses from all over the world and so much more.  The main day of operating is on a Saturday 8-6pm, but be prepared to fight through the crowds because it is also a tourist magnet.  The market also opens Monday to Friday, but at a steadier pace.

Hay's Galleria, London, SE1 2HD

Just 10 minutes walk from London Bridge station and Borough Market is Hay's Galleria.  A haven of shops, cafes and restaurants.  There is a very unusual shop called The Christmas Shop, 55A Tooley Street and they sell nothing but Christmas trees, decorations, card etc all year round.  It is a mecca for Christmas fanatics!  In early September of every year, there is really good seafood festival in Hays Galleria, worth going. Tourist Sites

The London Dungeon, 28-34 Tooley Street, London SE1 2SZ

Featuring a medieval siege, torture chamber, Jack the Ripper Experience and Judgement Day, this experience should scare the kids out of their wits.   This is no boring waxwork experience, as there are over a dozen scary costumed characters, many of whom make themselves known to the visitor by appearing from a dark corner or as an exhibit that suddenly comes to life, so you have been warned.  Definitely not for the squeamish or easily frightened.

The Golden Hind, Cathedral Street, London SE1 9DE

Situated at St Mary Overie Dock, The Golden Hinde is a fully operational reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake's 16th century galleon that sailed around the world during 1577-80. The modern galleon has also circumnavigated the globe, and is a floating museum open to the public.  There are five decks complete with 22 cannons and artefacts of the period while the professional actors onboard have extensive knowledge of 16th century life and how to bring history alive.
