The area of Bayswater and Paddington is a very vibrant and energetic district, especially throughout the summer when it is a magnet for overseas visitors. Centrally located just three miles from Charing Cross, Bayswater is based just at the northern part of Hyde Park making it both attractive and easily accessible. Shopping Bayswater High Street There is very good Asian supermarket on the high street, specialising in Asian/Oriental food. There is also the usual high street brands such as Holland & Barratt, Starbucks, McDonalds dotted along this high street. Whiteley's of Bayswater Shopping Centre, 151 Queensway, London W2 4YL There is a lovely Food hall with fresh cheese, pasta and seafood, which is especially good if you are intending to cook in your serviced apartment. Shops in the shopping centre are Muji, River Island, Starbucks, Zara. There is also a cinema on the top floor of the building. Notting Hill Market/Portobello Road The largest and most famous open air market in London offering antiques, vegetables, second hand items and much more. Open on Saturdays. Just get off at Notting Hill station on a Saturday and follow the crowd. Tourist Sites Hyde Park The most famous also one of the largest park in London, it is a magnet for all travellers. The park extends from Knightsbridge, all the way to Bayswater, with the Italian Garden entrance from Lancaster Gate. Every different entrance points show a different facet of Hyde Park's many features and characteristics. Restaurants & Bars/Pubs Royal China, 30 Queensway, London W2 4QJ One of the most famous Chinese restaurant brand in London, the first restaurant is based in Bayswater and still demands a loyal following. This long established Queensway branch of Royal China still has a special place in many peoples hearts. The spacious dining room is frequently full to capacity, particularly during weekend afternoons for the legendary dim sum (served until 5pm). If you are more adventurous why not try some of the authentic dishes such as preserved pork knuckle with jellyfish and several styles of abalone alongside more classic Peking duck and Singapore noodles. One of Royal China's strong points is their fish dishes, such as the deep fried soft shell crab with spicy salt, worth a try. There are also beers, sakes, cocktails and soft drinks on the extensive list. Cous Cous Cafe, 7 Porchester Gardens, London W2 4DB Tucked off busy Queensway, this quirky Moroccan treasure trove (set just below street level) is a delight. The bamboo ceiling and walls lined with North African bric a brac adds a lovely authentic touch. Mezze platters and pastries filled with spicy lamb are a yummy starter, then the main courses of tagines and stews come with more bread and succulent couscous. Al Waha, 75 Westbourne Grove, London W2 4UL Al Waha is a very popular and busy restaurant, so do try to book ahead or be prepared to wait for a table. Meals start with fresh crudités to whet your appetite. The starter selection is mouth wateringly vast and offers almost 50 dishes. The pleasure of eating lots of small starter dishes is sometimes better than moving on to a main course. The ever popular tabbouleh and yoghurt dips are a must, but it is worth adding something more unusual, such as the salatate al rahib (smoked aubergine, green peppers, tomatoes, spring onions and garlic) or one of many variations on nayeh (raw lamb). There are also daily specials. The Champion, 1 Wellington Terrace, Bayswater road, London W2 4LW Mix of cheerful staff, relaxed atmosphere makes this a family friendly place to hang out for a pint. During summer there is a small beer garden. For a bite to eat you will find an eclectic mix which offers everything from true British classics to international nibbles, there is a British style roast lunch on Sundays.
