Kensington & Earls Court

Kensington and Earls Court are very popular destinations especially with the leisure travellers, famous for its relaxed atmosphere and museums.  Kensington is a large district and is divided into the north, south, east and west, with the west being the least popular.  Most of the best shopping and restaurants are located in the south, east and west of Kensington.  Earls Court is famous mainly for the Earls Court and Olympia Exhibition Centre, and has many cheap eateries, so perfect for saving money.  These two areas are vibrant and energetic, but there is a more laid back atmosphere compared to busy Oxford street, which makes it ideal for families.  Here are some of our highlights of these districts to help you plan your stay in Kensington and Earls Court.

Shopping

High Street Kensington

Though High Street Kensington may not have the upmarket cache of neighbouring Knightsbridge or the mad frenzy of Oxford street, it has its own unique charm, peace!  Like everything else in Kensington it is relaxed and you will not be jostling for space whilst shopping.  With its own underground station (High Street Kensington) makes it very easy to get to, which is a bonus.  On the high street you will find all of the recognizable brand names such as Marks and Spencer, Next, River Island and Miss Selfridge. Turning right from the underground will offer more expensive and more exclusive shopping. Kensington High Street offers it all.

If you go down either Camden Hill road or Church Street, you will find shops offering a huge array of Victorian paintings, Art Deco and Oriental pieces.  For those interested in more exclusive designer clothes, Barkers Arcade on Kensington High Street offers Jaeger and Karen Millen labels.  Just off Church Street is the Kensington Market, a professional and well laid out market place.

Kensington Park, the genteel location for the Princess Diana Memorial is a peaceful haven and perfect to a brisk walk in summer.

Restaurants & Bars/Pubs

Pasha, 1 Gloucester Place, London SW7 4PP

For an exotic night, Pasha is a delightful jewel from Morocco.  Imagine being pampered in the harem of a sheikh and surrounded by silks and lush mosaics.  On the ground floor there is a lounge and then in the lower ground there is the moodily lit restaurant.  Eating Moroccan style is all about sharing dishes, so you need to order some selections to entice the tastebuds.  There are light starters such as the perennial favourite of hummous and tabbouleh, then main courses of tagines with couscous.   The chicken tagine with preserved lemon, olives is melt in your mouth.  But the house speciality of a rich, luscious dish of whole braised duck with ras el hanout spices and melted foie gras is stunning.  To finish off after such treats, a pot of mint tea and fruit will cleanse the palate.

Wodka, 12 St Albans Grove W8 5PN

If you fancy a taste of eastern European cuisine then Wodka offers the perfect menu of pierogi dumplings, roast meat, and wild mushroom broth. If the Eastern cuisine becomes too stodgy, there are lighter dishes more inclined for the western palate such as red snapper with artichokes and red peppers.  Go to this restaurant if you are feeling really hungry, as they do believe in giving decent portions.

L'Etranger, 36 Gloucester Road SW7 4QT

Upmarket restaurant offering French & Asian fusion cuisine.   Innovate menu with delicious starters such as tuna spring rolls, while main courses such as wild rabbit with honey mustard sauce makes this really exciting to the tastebud.

The Atlas, 16 Seagrave Road SW6 1RX

Warm and welcoming pub with open fireplaces and oak panelling, makes this a great place to meet friends and have a pint.  Excellent food menu with rump steak sandwiches or even a melt in the mouth risotto.
